Xi Jinping leaves Washington today. The toasts are done. The B-1s have gone home. The only question worth a Friday piece is whether he heard what was said — and what was not.
President Trump rolled out a rare planeside welcome at Joint Base Andrews on Sept. 23: red carpet, 21-gun salute, two B-1 bombers over the anthem, then a B-2 and F-22s over the White House the next day. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox the trade truce, set to lapse Nov. 10, is kicked to Jan. 10. China promised pandas for Zoo Atlanta. Xi skipped the U.N. General Assembly and sent Vice President Han Zheng instead.
That is the table.
Under the table is Iran.
The U.S. war with the Islamic Republic is in its seventh month. Fox, citing Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Trump needed to tell Xi the China-Iran tie is a “dangerous alliance” and that it has to stop: drone parts and motors, dual-use chemicals for missiles, targeting that looks too clean for Tehran alone, and the oil money that keeps the regime afloat. Israel Hayom, citing Fox’s Peter Doocy, said the president’s top ask this week was that China stop feeding Iran intelligence used against Americans and allies — including strikes that may have killed U.S. troops.
The Wall Street Journal, timed to the visit, reported about 1,300 dual-use shipments from China to Iran’s defense ministry through June. CNN the same week said Chinese geospatial help improved Iranian shots at U.S. bases and at ships in Hormuz. Reuters earlier reported a planned buy of 300 to 400 Chinese shoulder-fired missiles. In May, in Beijing, Trump said Xi pledged no military gear and even offered help on the Strait of Hormuz. The summer lists say the pipeline did not close.
Gordon Chang told Newsmax in June that until Washington “brings the hammer down” on Beijing, the agony continues. His September Gatestone piece put Iran on the same map as Ukraine: a proxy fight, not a misunderstanding.
So the question is simple enough for an eighth-grade reader:
Did the bombers and the closed-door “top ask” leave Xi sure of two things — that the United States intends to finish the IRGC, and that helping that finish is in China’s interest? Or did he take the carpet, extend the truce two months, and keep the old team?
We will not pretend to know on wheels-up day. Next Friday we score the week that follows, not the dinner.
